Slow Cooker Method:
1. Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker with a small amount of butter or oil to prevent sticking.
2. Add the pinhead oats, diced apples, water, milk, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt into the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
3. Cut the butter into small pieces and distribute it evenly across the top.
4. Cover and cook on low heat for 6-8 hours (overnight).
5. In the morning, stir in the vanilla extract, mix well, and serve warm.
Stovetop Method:
1. In a medium saucepan, combine the pinhead oats, diced apples, water, milk, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Stir to combine.
2. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally.
3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer, stirring frequently, for 30-40 minutes, or until the oats are tender and the mixture has thickened to your desired consistency.
4. Stir in the butter and vanilla extract just before serving.
Cooking Tips:
Use pinhead oats only; regular rolled oats will become too mushy
Choose firm apples like Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Gala
Coat the slow cooker well to prevent sticking
Don’t lift the lid during cooking as this releases necessary moisture
For extra apple flavor, try using apple cider instead of some of the water
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days
Nutritional Notes:
This hearty breakfast is:
High in fiber
Good source of protein
Rich in complex carbohydrates

If you cook this recipe in the slow cooker it will provide a warm, comforting breakfast that’s ready when you wake up, filling your home with the cozy aroma of apples and cinnamon. But if you prefer to use the stove top method it will still produce a hearty and warming breakfast.
